Description
The Ropewalk in Barton-upon-Humber is a renowned arts centre that draws over 100,000 visitors annually. Built in 1767, the Grade II-listed building is the longest of its kind in the UK measuring a quarter of a mile. It features a gallery, sculpture garden, museum, and café. At the northern end of the building, Ropery Hall hosts a variety of events including live music, theatre, comedy, cinema, and corporate meetings. The Ropewalk also holds workshops, and provides artist studios and office space for creative industries.
Until you see the building in person you can’t really appreciate the length of this former ropemaking centre of industry close to the Humber Bridge. Rope makers created outdoor spaces on straight and level ground referred to as ropewalks. The length of a ropewalk determined the longest rope that could be made in it.
