Description

Description

The Granary is magnificent 19th century grade II listed building located on Welsh Back (wharf) in Bristol. The former grain store, also known as Wait and James’ Granary, was designed by Archibald Ponton and William Venn Gough, and built from red Cattybrook brick. Its impressive detail made of black and white brick with limestone dressings is one of the best preserved examples of the Bristol Byzantine style (popular in Bristol during the late 1800s influenced by Byzantine and Moorish architecture).

During the mid to late 20th century it was a well-known nightclub ‘The Granary’. It hosted bands from Iron Maiden to Ian Drury, Squeeze to Slade, and Def Leppard to Dire Straits (and loads more musical legends in between!)
As with many buildings of this scale, it was converted into apartments in the early 2000s. In 2023, it opened as an all-day restaurant that focuses on seasonality and sustainability.
Fun fact: In popular culture, it was the location for one of the most famous scenes from Only Fools and Horses – the one where Del Boy falls through the bar talking to Trigger!
