Its Cornish name of Karrek Loos yn Koos “the grey rock in a wood” may have connections to a folk memory of Mount’s Bay before it was flooded, suggesting the area of the mount was set in woodland.
Crowned with a medieval church and castle, and surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, the island is home to close-knit community of about 30 islanders, many of whom take on roles of stewardship of the island and its associated tourist attractions.
