Description

Description

Brainchild of philanthropist Sir Titus Salt, Salts Mill and Saltaire Village became the centrepiece of his utopian vision. Opening in 1853, it was a thriving centre of commerce.

On being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, UNESCO commented: “Saltaire is an outstanding and well preserved example of a mid 19th century industrial town. The layout and architecture of Saltaire admirably reflect mid-19th century philanthropic paternalism, as well as the important role played by the textile industry in economic and social development.”
After the production of cotton came to an end in the mid-1980s, the mill was purchased by visionary entrepreneur, Jonathan Silver, who was instrumental in breathing new life into Salts Mill. He was also responsible for bringing artist David Hockney’s world-famous art to grace its walls.
