Description
Dominating the top of Calton Hill in Edinburgh and modelled on the Parthenon in Athens, the National Monument of Scotland was designed in the 1820s by Charles Robert Cockerell and William Henry Playfair. Unfinished due to lack of funding, just twelve columns were constructed, giving rise to various nicknames such as ‘Scotland’s Folly’, ‘Edinburgh’s Disgrace’, ‘the Pride and Poverty of Scotland’ and ‘Edinburgh’s Folly’.
Despite the nicknames, the monument stands proudly on the Edinburgh skyline as a memorial to the Scottish soldiers and sailors who died during the Napoleonic Wars.
I’ve visited the monument on a couple of occasions. This design depicts the day when the skies were clear with no rain in sight!
