Description
Locke Park is a well-known local green space in the borough of Barnsley, covering 47 acres, The tower was created in memory of Phoebe Locke, the widow of esteemed civil engineer and railway pioneer, Joseph Locke. In 1861 Phoebe donated land for the creation of a park for the people of Barnsley to enjoy. And to commemorate her, the tower was built at the request of Phoebe’s sister Sarah McCreery. Designed by Paris-trained architect and Master of Architecture at the Royal Academy Schools, Richard Phené Spiers, Locke Park Tower stands 70ft and is located on the highest point of the park and the very land donated by Phoebe in the mid-19th century – a place that is still much used and much loved today by the people of Barnsley!
