Description
Standing almost 18 metres above the sea, two forts – Haile Sand and Bull Sand – were constructed during WWI to help defend the sea entrance to the Humber Estuary. After modernisation, the forts were reactivated during WWII, both coming under regular attack from enemy vessels. But as with progress and new defence developments, the forts were abandoned by the military in 1956.
The smaller of the two, Haile Sand, is located closer to the Cleethorpes-Humberston part of the North Sea coast. Interestingly both were sold in recent years. I wonder what will become of them?
Quoting Dr Robb Robinson of the University of Hull (in The Lincolnite): “the forts were a reminder of a ‘long-ago age of maritime conflict, built when Britain’s east coast was on the maritime frontline.'”.
