Description
Located in an AONB, Culmstock Beacon is part of a chain of Elizabethan beacons that were used for lighting fires as a warning of advancing enemies. High up on the edge of Blackdown Common, this beehive-shaped structure was built of flint, and later rebuilt in 1870 after the collapse of the original beacon. Accessible via bridleways and footpaths, this is a popular area for locals, and the perfect spot at which to enjoy a picnic while taking in the panoramic views of Devon and Somerset. Also available in this South West series: Wellington Monument, Glastonbury Tor, The Valley of the Rocks, Porlock Bay, Low Lighthouse, King’s College Taunton, and King’s Hall School (Taunton), The Eden Project, Minack Theatre, Jubilee Pool (Penzance) and Clifton Suspension Bridge.
